Mission statement
Sports Medicine Australia is a national multi-disciplinary organisation of professionals committed to working together to enhance the health of all Australians through safe participation in sport and physical activity.
Sports Medicine Australia will function as the peak body for:
- Medicine and science in physical activity and sport
- Medical and health care of active persons at all levels
- Well-being through safe physical activity
- Prevention of health problems associated with inactivity
Sports Medicine Australia (SMA) is Australia’s peak national umbrella body for sports medicine and sports science and the leading advisory body on all medical and health issues for active people – from weekend enthusiasts of all ages through to elite level competition. The healthy and safe participation of Australians in sport is the primary concern for all involved with SMA. SMA can provide expert information, advice and commentary on a diverse range of sport, activity and health issues including government policy, safer sport and gender equity publishing a large range of informative books, pamphlets and fact sheets for the community and professionals.
SMA plays an active role in educating professionals and sports-minded community members and in assisting all active people to achieve optimal benefits from their exercise, activity and competition. SMA draws together all sports science, sports medicine and public health professionals, ensuring that we are the leading multi-disciplinary organisation. These groups include: s
ports physicians, sports doctors, physiotherapists, podiatrists, dietitians, psychologists, sports scientists, soft tissue therapists and public health promoters.
SMA organises events that encourage inter-professional exchange and communication at a level previously unknown in Australia. These events ensure Australia continues to foster the talented professionals working in the field and remain a world leader in research in the sports sciences and sports medicine fields. It also provides the platform needed to develop guidelines and policy statements on all pertinent issues.
On a practical level it means that Australia can provide the best possible service to athletes at any major world sporting event, and showcase the strength of our sports medicine professionals at events like the 2005 Deaflympics and the Melbourne 2006 Commonwealth Games.
At a community level SMA is responsible for creating a safe playing field in which all Australians can actively and freely participate. It participates in the community through coverage, educating and accrediting sports first aiders and sports trainers. The delivery of the Safer Sport message throughout Australia is achieved through the development and design of courses and educational resources for coaches, trainers, teachers and participants.
SMA is also actively involved in a number of other community programs including Smartplay, CleanEdge, PICSAR, Tip the Balance – Alcohol Management in Sport and the Indigenous Safer Sport Program.
Sports Medicine Australia works to ensure the safety of all active Australians, and the continued professional development of persons interested in sports science, sports medicine and healthy activity.
